The City of Selma has operated a Construction and Demolition Landfill within the city limits since 1983. The current landfill is located at 4555 Water Avenue. The landfill accepts waste from all generators of construction and demolition debris. The landfill also accepts vegetative waste (i.e. leaves, limbs, small trees, small tree trunks, etc). Vegetative waste collected city-wide is deposited at this site. The landfill is open from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The landfill is closed on all city holidays.
The tipping fee schedule for the landfill is:
Customers may "pay as you go" or receive a monthly billing statement.
Certain waste cannot be deposited at the site. Primarily, no trash containing food and/or food preparation waste (i.e.,
"household waste"), is acceptable. Other unacceptable waste is: dead animals, computer monitors, televisions, food/food containers, large tree trunks/stumps.
In an effort to prevent littering of city streets to the landfill, all vehicles entering the site must be covered. Uncovered vehicles are assessed a $20.00 surcharge subsequent to an initial warning.
The landfill is subject to regular environmental testing and unannounced state inspections. As waste is received at the site, it is immediately compacted by a 37.5 ton trash compactor tractor. Federal and state regulations require a weekly soil covering of the waste.
When the landfill reaches capacity and is closed, the city has plans to develop a walking trail/recreational park on the site for the benefit of all of
the citizens of Selma.
