Mayor's Thanksgiving Message

Mayor George EvansWe have so much to be thankful for on this Thanksgiving Day. We have a beautiful and historic city that should be a source of great pride. In spite of the economic downturn that has impacted so many of our sister cities, we are fiscally strong. All around us there are signs of resurgence. Our industries are expanding and our retail sector is growing. With your support, the bond issue helped us to make infrastructure improvements, renovate public buildings, purchase new equipment and to install a fiber network, expand our broadband capability and upgrade technology across city government. The renovations at Memorial Stadium helped us to attract the AHSAA track meet for the next three years. New housing projects are under construction or in the planning stage. We have new walking trails in every ward, new streetscaping and public spaces downtown, and are well on our way to making our vision for Riverfront Park a reality. Selma is on the move!

My thanks to the more than 300 dedicated city employees who strive to provide the best possible service day in and day out. Thanks to our elected officials at every level who have worked together to make a better city, county, state and nation, Thanks to the individuals, organizations and businesses who rise to the occasion whenever asked to donate funds and to volunteer their time and services for community and charity events. Thanks to our schools and colleges that educate us and to the civic and community organizations that sponsor the festivals and arts and cultural events that inform and entertain us and enhance our quality of life. Thanks to our public library for providing access to knowledge. Thanks to our health care providers for their dedication and commitment to our well being. Thanks to our spiritual leaders and houses of worship that uplift our spirits, feed our souls and bring us closer to God. Despite the challenges we face and our occasional differences, we are One Selma!

As you celebrate Thanksgiving, surrounded by the love and support of family and friends, please remember to reach out to those in our community who are less fortunate, to give gratitude for the police, firefighters and first responders who keep us safe, and to pray for the brave men and women at home and abroad who are fighting to maintain our liberties.

Wishing you the happiest Thanksgiving. Be well and be blessed.

Mayor George Patrick Evans
