Selma Lead-Safe and Healthy Home

Grants Available

To Make Your Home Safe!

The City of Selma has received a $2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to implement a Lead Hazard Reduction Grant Program aimed at reducing housing-related health and safety hazards.

The City of Selma’s Lead-Safe Program is an initiative designed to create safer and healthier homes by addressing housing-related hazards in Selma. The program is funded by HUD’s Office of Lead Hazard Control and Healthy Homes and is implemented by the City of Selma to improve living conditions for low- and very low-income families, including households with children and senior citizens.

Homeowners and rental property owners within the Selma limits may qualify for grants to fund improvements. A list of potential items that qualify:

  • New windows
  • New doors
  • Fresh paint
  • Aluminum trim

Program Overview

Program Goals:

  • Reduce childhood diseases and injuries in Selma by addressing health and safety hazards in 120 housing units.
  • Perform lead hazard control work in housing where children and senior citizens are at highest risk.
  • Conduct targeted outreach to families and community education on the importance of hazard prevention and maintaining safe housing conditions.
  • Ensure housing units made safe by the program remain lead-free and hazard-free, with a focus on serving low-income families with children under the age of six and senior citizens.
  • Build local capacity by training and certifying workers to safely perform lead hazard control and other health-focused housing upgrades.

This initiative will make homes safer and healthier for Selma’s most vulnerable residents, ensuring long-term improvements to living conditions.

Dangers of Lead Based Paint Hazards

Small children are particularly vulnerable to the dangers of lead-based paint. Lead dust poses a significant risk, especially for babies and young children, as it can stick to their hands and toys. It can also be tracked into the home from porches or soil around the property. Lead dust is often invisible and tends to accumulate on window sills and floor surfaces.

Exposure to Lead Can Cause:

  • Behavioral issues
  • Damage to vital organs
  • Learning difficulties
  • Speech and language problems

Where Lead-Based Paint Can Be Found:

  • Windows and doors
  • Siding and trim
  • Porches and railings
